Ferrari Faces Devastating Winless Season as Leclerc Doubts Title Clash Opportunities

Ferrari Faces Desperate Fight to Avoid Winless Season as Leclerc Questions Their Competitive Edge

As the Formula 1 season races towards its climax, Charles Leclerc has thrown a bucket of cold water on any hopes that Ferrari could capitalize on the intense title battle unfolding between McLaren’s rising stars and Max Verstappen. With only five races left in 2025, the Scuderia faces the grim prospect of finishing the season without a single victory—a stark contrast to the promising potential they had last year.

Leclerc’s candid remarks underscore a harsh reality: while Ferrari’s championship drought is set to continue, the team might still wield influence in deciding which driver ultimately claims the crown. The battlefield is heating up with Red Bull’s astonishing resurgence putting Verstappen within striking distance, just 40 points behind McLaren’s Oscar Piastri, who currently holds a slender 14-point lead over teammate Lando Norris.

The stakes were raised during last weekend’s United States Grand Prix, where Leclerc’s strategic maneuvering allowed Verstappen to leapfrog Norris, setting him up for a commanding lead. However, despite the dramatic twists and turns of the race, Leclerc remains skeptical about Ferrari’s ability to seize the moment. He remarked, “The context is always important when you’re fighting someone, so you are aware that, in my case, there’s not much to lose. In their cases, there’s a lot to lose, so that gives a little bit of an advantage.”

Yet, Leclerc’s acknowledgment of that “advantage” comes with a sobering caveat: Ferrari simply lacks the pace to compete with the likes of McLaren and Red Bull. “For that, to use this advantage, I need to be on their pace,” he admitted. “But at the moment, it doesn’t seem that we are on the pace of McLaren or Red Bull.”

The uncertainty looms large as Leclerc anticipates how the title contenders will navigate the remaining races. “Especially at the start, when you have these kinds of situations, you know that these three drivers will be a bit more cautious with me. So that’s a good thing to know,” he added, hinting at a glimmer of hope amid a dismal season.

Despite Verstappen’s recent surge—claiming victory in three of the last four races—Leclerc has placed his bets on McLaren drivers to secure the championship. “I think Max is always driving at a very high level and considering Red Bull is probably the team that has pushed the development more than other teams,” he stated. He believes that McLaren might have paused their development too early, creating a window for Verstappen to catch up.

Leclerc’s guarded optimism is palpable as he weighs the possibility of Verstappen making a championship comeback. “I’d be very surprised if he manages to win the championship from where he is,” he said, reflecting the daunting 40-point gap. “If I had to bet one dollar, I’d probably hold on the McLaren drivers, but you can never rule out Max.”

As Ferrari grapples with its struggles on the track, only time will tell if they can muster the performance needed to avoid a winless season. The clock is ticking, and the pressure is mounting. Will Ferrari rise to the occasion, or will they fade into obscurity as the F1 world watches the fierce battle for the championship unfold?
