Richard Petty does not see major issues with Denny Hamlin’s alleged early start in Richmond. In an exciting battle in overtime, Hamlin defeated his experienced teammate and delighted the local crowd with his 53rd Cup win.
However, Hamlin’s victory was surrounded by controversy, as Martin Truex Jr. accused the No. 11 Toyota of jumping the start in his post-race interview. Race footage showed the winner accelerating early. Nevertheless, NASCAR cleared Hamlin of any wrongdoing, acknowledging it was a tough call. Richard Petty, seven-time Cup champion, acknowledged that the 23XI Racing co-owner did indeed jump the start but does not see it as a significant issue.
A fan questioned whether NASCAR should have reprimanded Hamlin on the final restart, to which Petty replied that the race is already in the past and should be considered history. He also recognized the difficulty of making a decision for NASCAR so long after the race. Petty believes there is no problem with Hamlin’s victory, although he understands Martin Truex Jr.’s frustration.
Petty’s former team boss and NASCAR legend also commented on the situation, stating that the results were fair. He urged the racing community to set aside the controversy, as there is nothing more to be done.
Meanwhile, Martin Truex Jr., the only driver who may have been affected by the alleged early start, has already shifted his focus to the next race at Martinsville. It would be beneficial for NASCAR to provide details on their decision not to penalize Hamlin and establish a clear precedent for future races.
