New record: over 2 million electric vehicles sold in September.

Novo recorde: mais de 2 milhões de elétricos vendidos em setembro

Several records were broken in September by electric vehicle sales. It was the first time in history that, in a single month, more than two million electric vehicles were sold worldwide – specifically, 2.1 million, an increase of 26% compared to September 2024. Leading the ranking is, of course, China, with 1.3 million units sold in September, which means a new national record, about two-thirds of global sales, and an increase of 28% compared to the same month last year (performance influenced by factors such as a network approaching three million public charging points, ongoing support from local authorities for electric vehicle sales, and quite aggressive pricing policies).

Also in Europe, September was the month with the highest electric vehicle sales, 427,000, a growth of 36% compared to September last year – it is expected to be a trend that will continue, largely due to the incentives for electric vehicle sales that are already in place or will soon be in effect in some of its main markets, such as the United Kingdom and Germany. Nevertheless, at least in percentage terms, it was in the U.S. that electric vehicle sales grew the most, around 66% (the second consecutive month of sales increase), but with two fundamental caveats: no more than 215,000 units sold (which demonstrates the still weak implementation of electric mobility in the second largest automotive market in the world), and even so, a performance surely very inflated by the end, on September 30, of tax incentives for the purchase of electric vehicles by companies and individuals, thus forecasting a sharp decline in sales in the final quarter of the year.

In the accumulated total for the year, approximately 14.7 million electric vehicles have been sold worldwide (an increase of 26% compared to the first nine months of 2024), with estimates suggesting that by the end of 2025, if the current growth rate continues, sales could surpass 18 million units. Once again, without surprise, China is at the top of the list, with around 9 million units sold (up 24% from last year), followed by Europe, with approximately 3 million (up 32% from 2024), and the USA, with 1.5 million (up 11% from the previous year). In the remaining markets around the world, sales reached 1.2 million units, representing an increase of 48% compared to 2024.
