Ross Chastain’s Rollercoaster Ride: Disappointment Haunts P9 Finish at New Hampshire
In a heart-pounding race filled with highs and lows, Ross Chastain faced a tumultuous day at the Mobil 1 301 event at New Hampshire Motor Speedway, ultimately finishing in a disappointing ninth place. The Trackhouse Racing star was candid about the struggles he encountered, describing it as a ‘long day of adjustments’ in pursuit of competitive momentum.
Starting the race from eighth position, Chastain’s journey quickly spiraled downward as he slipped out of the top-10 in both stages. He found himself in P12 during Stage 1 and P13 in Stage 2, battling significant handling issues that plagued his No. 1 Kubota Chevy. However, the team rallied to fix the car’s performance, allowing Chastain to mount a late-race comeback, though it wasn’t enough to secure a top-5 finish.
In a post-race interview, Chastain shared his frustration and insights, stating, “We started the race just way too tight coming out of the Goodyear tire test here. We tried to shore up the entry and exit, and thought we could still make it turn in the center and that just wasn’t the case. So, it was a long day of adjustments for the one boys at Kubota Chevy… I just had to keep dealing with the exit because we never had good forward drive like we thought we would.” Despite the challenges, Chastain managed to express a sense of bittersweet satisfaction, saying, “Yeah, I just took us too long to get any stage points, but cool to be disappointed with ninth.”
This ninth-place finish marks Chastain’s first top-10 result in the current playoffs, a much-needed boost after narrowly missing the mark at Darlington, where he finished 11th. His previous outing at Gateway was a stark disappointment, ending in a 24th-place finish after starting strong in sixth. The Bristol round was no better, as he limped home a lap down in 19th position. Now sitting ninth in the playoff standings, Chastain is 12 points adrift from the playoff cutline, intensifying the pressure as the championship race heats up.
Looking ahead, the Kansas Speedway presents an opportunity for redemption. Chastain, having previously clinched victory at this very track during last year’s playoffs, is eager to channel that success once more. “Go win. Smashed watermelon there last year,” he declared, setting a bold and aggressive tone for his upcoming performance.
As the only Trackhouse driver left in contention for the title, Chastain’s journey is now more critical than ever. While Shane Van Gisbergen faced elimination in the Round of 16, Chastain is determined to learn from the Kiwi’s experience and capitalize on his own strengths in the upcoming races.
With the stakes higher than ever and the pressure mounting, can Ross Chastain turn his fortunes around and reclaim his spot among the elite drivers in NASCAR? The countdown to Kansas is on, and fans are eager to see if this talented racer can once again smash through the competition!
