Flavio Briatore has ignited a whirlwind of speculation regarding Franco Colapinto’s future in Formula 1 following a pivotal contract announcement by Alpine at the Italian Grand Prix. As the F1 circus rolled into Monza for its thrilling 16th round of the championship, the spotlight shifted to Alpine’s decision-making, particularly after lead driver Pierre Gasly secured a long-term contract that will keep him at the team until the end of the 2028 season. A bold move, but what does it mean for the team’s second seat?

With the pressure mounting, Briatore, Colapinto’s mentor and former team principal, spoke candidly to Sky Sports F1 about the young Argentine’s prospects. As Colapinto navigated his way through a challenging FP3, ultimately finishing P14, the question loomed large: Who will partner Gasly for the upcoming seasons? Briatore, however, offered a mix of cautious optimism and strategic foresight, stating, “For the moment, I believe Franco is doing a good job… he was a bit inexperienced in the beginning, like a lot of the rookies, young drivers. Now, in the last three, four races, he’s much more consistent, no mistakes and maybe it’s Franco, maybe we see.”

But the clock is ticking. When pressed about a timeline for Alpine’s decision regarding their second driver, Briatore was clear: “No, before. It is November we need to make a decision.” This statement indicates that Colapinto will at least finish the current season, but the looming deadline suggests that a decision will be made sooner rather than later, leaving fans on the edge of their seats.

Alpine’s choice for their second driver is not just a matter of filling a seat; it’s critical for their competitive edge as they gear up for a new era of regulations in 2026. With Colapinto currently on a race-by-race contract, the stakes couldn’t be higher. The pressure is palpable, especially after Colapinto had to step aside during FP1 to allow rookie Paul Aron a chance to shine.

As we edge closer to the conclusion of the season, all eyes will be on Briatore and Alpine as they navigate this crucial decision that could shape the future not just for Colapinto, but for the entire team. Will they gamble on the promising talent of a young driver, or will they opt for a more seasoned racer? The next few races will be decisive, and the F1 world is watching closely.
