Red Bull Racing Holds the Line: No Urgency in Securing Max Verstappen’s 2026 Team-Mate!

In a thrilling twist to the upcoming Formula 1 saga, Red Bull Racing’s hierarchy has come forward to declare they’re in no rush to finalize the identity of Max Verstappen’s team-mate for the 2026 season. This revelation comes from the team’s new boss, Laurent Mekies, who took over the reins following Christian Horner’s departure in July. The stakes are high, and the spotlight is firmly on Yuki Tsunoda, Verstappen’s current partner, whose performance has been anything but stellar since stepping in for Liam Lawson in the 2025 season.

Tsunoda’s struggles are evident as he languishes in 18th place in the driver standings, having only mustered a meager seven points. The narrative surrounding Red Bull’s second seat has been a tumultuous one, with past contenders like Lawson, Sergio Perez, Alex Albon, and Pierre Gasly all facing their own challenges. Yet, Mekies insists that they are not feeling the pressure to make a hasty decision.

Despite the turbulent waters, there are glimmers of hope for Tsunoda. His recent outings have shown promise, particularly his remarkable seventh-place qualifying at the Belgian Grand Prix, marking his best performance of the year. Mekies commented, “The reality for us is that we’re not in any hurry. We’re lucky to have Yuki in the car; we have Racing Bulls, which is working very well, and where we can also evaluate our young drivers.”

In light of this, Red Bull seems to be taking a methodical approach, focusing on the remaining races of the 2025 season, where they currently sit fourth in the championship and trail Mercedes by 42 points. Mekies emphasized the importance of positioning their drivers for success, stating, “We understand the questions and the impatience surrounding this. But for us, it’s first and foremost about trying to put our drivers in the best possible position for the remainder of the season and seeing where we are in a few months’ time.”

With 10 races left on the calendar, the team has plenty of time to assess their options. Mekies noted, “Yuki took a real step forward at Spa and also in Budapest in terms of his deficit to Max. It wasn’t very noticeable because in Budapest we weren’t competitive overall.”

As for the competition, Red Bull’s junior team, Racing Bulls, is witnessing significant progress from drivers like Liam Lawson and Isack Hadjar, who continues to impress with his extraordinary performances this season. The pressure is mounting, and with the driver market always a hot topic, the decision regarding Verstappen’s next team-mate could prove pivotal for Red Bull’s future.

As the F1 world watches with bated breath, one thing is clear: Red Bull Racing is taking its time. The team is poised to make a strategic move when the moment is right, but for now, they’re laser-focused on extracting the best from the remainder of the season. The anticipation is palpable, and fans can’t help but wonder who will ultimately join the ranks alongside the four-time world champion in 2026!
