Hollywood met horsepower — and Formula 1 may never look the same again. The Brad Pitt–Lewis Hamilton–backed racing epic has officially roared past the half-billion mark at the global box office, with a staggering $590 million haul, cementing its place as the most successful motorsport movie of all time. Yes, it even overtook Pixar’s Cars 2, which grossed $559.8 million.
The film’s winning lap? A turbocharged mix of blockbuster storytelling, high-octane real racing action, and surprise cameos from the sport’s biggest names. And that includes none other than Mercedes boss Toto Wolff, who slipped into the Hollywood spotlight for a fleeting but unforgettable appearance.
Wolff’s scene comes at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, where he turns to Damson Idris’s rookie star Joshua Pearce and deadpans: “If you ever think about leaving APX GP, Mercedes would be interested.”
But while fans loved it, Wolff himself couldn’t hide his embarrassment when recalling the moment. Speaking to the Wall Street Journal, he laughed:
“At the end I have this little cameo. They say it’s great, but I think they’re lying to me. It makes me cringe. It was in Abu Dhabi after the race. There was no hair and makeup. They were like, ‘Let’s do this now.’ They were a bit annoyed with me because I think I did the scene five times. I wanted it to be good—not that the outcome actually was good.”
For Wolff, sharing the set with Brad Pitt, Javier Bardem, director Joe Kosinski and producer Jerry Bruckheimer was “interesting” — but it also reminded him that his place is in the paddock, not on the silver screen.
Still, the cameo adds to the film’s magic, blending the real F1 paddock with Hollywood’s finest. With Pitt embodying veteran driver Sonny Hayes and Idris as the fiery rookie Pearce, the movie has smashed records and fueled fresh hype for Formula 1 worldwide.
From Spielberg to Silverstone, this is cinema on overdrive — and while Toto Wolff may cringe, fans will be grinning all the way to the theater.
