Ryan Preece Aims for Glory: Can He Conquer Richmond’s Stage 1 Without Caution?

NASCAR Cup Series driver Ryan Preece (60) walks Sunday, July 27, 2025, before the Brickyard 400 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

Ryan Preece Aims for Glory from the Pole at Richmond: Will He Conquer Stage One?

In a thrilling opening to the Cook Out 400, Ryan Preece has seized the coveted pole position at Richmond Raceway, positioning himself at the forefront of a high-stakes battle for playoff spots. As the green flag waves, all eyes will be on Preece, who is determined to navigate the first 70 laps without a hitch—specifically, without any caution flags that could derail his momentum.

Starting from the pole is a double-edged sword. While Preece enjoys the clear air ahead, he is acutely aware of the potential pitfalls that come with it, especially on a notoriously tire-eating track like Richmond. In a bold statement, he articulated his strategy: “There’s no better place than starting on pole, and with stage one being 70 laps, I don’t think you’re going to have anybody pitting in that stage because there’s no way you can make it up.” This sets the stage for a fierce competition, where tire management and strategy will play crucial roles.

However, the fear of caution flags looms large. Preece’s concern is palpable: if the yellow flag flies, it could cost him precious track position and impact his carefully laid pit strategy. “My math would say somebody coming in and pitting after 35 laps and splitting a 70-lap stage where there’s potential for a lot of cautions… I just think the risk is too much,” he explained. This is a sentiment echoed by many in the field who recognize that pitting under green at this 0.75-mile oval could plunge them multiple laps down, a nightmare scenario for any driver.

This race is not just about pride; it’s about playoff survival. Currently sitting 34 points below the cutline, Preece faces an uphill battle with only a couple of races left in the regular season. The pressure mounts as he looks to close the gap on drivers like Tyler Reddick, Alex Bowman, and his own teammate Chris Buescher, who currently hold the playoff spots.

After securing his first pole position of the 2025 NASCAR season, Preece is brimming with confidence. Reflecting on his achievement, he remarked, “I felt like it was on my bingo card, I’m not sure about everybody else’s.” This marks a significant milestone in his career, being only his second pole, the first coming in the 2023 NOCO 400 at Martinsville, where he led for a substantial portion of the race before finishing 15th.

As the Cook Out 400 approaches, set to kick off at 7:30 PM ET, the anticipation is palpable. Will Ryan Preece’s gamble for a caution-free stage pay off, or will the unpredictable nature of NASCAR strike again? One thing is certain: the stakes have never been higher, and Preece is ready to leave everything on the track as he fights for his playoff dreams. Buckle up; this is going to be a race for the ages!
