Tesla, led by Elon Musk, has requested a license from the British energy regulator to supply electricity to households in the United Kingdom.
The license will allow Tesla to enter a market where several large energy companies currently provide this essential service to consumers in England, Wales, and Scotland.
The application to the UK energy regulator, Ofgem, was submitted at the end of last month by Tesla Energy Ventures Limited, based in Manchester.
Tesla currently holds a license for electricity generation in the UK, which it primarily does through photovoltaic panels, but it cannot sell to consumers. Until now, Tesla’s electricity distribution activities have been limited to the state of Texas in the southern United States, where the brand is headquartered.
It is worth noting that Tesla, in addition to manufacturing electric vehicles, has a business in battery storage and solar energy supply.
