Liam Lawson’s Struggle: Is Qualification Derailing His Formula 1 Career?

In the high-octane world of Formula 1, where every millisecond counts, rookie sensation Liam Lawson has boldly admitted that his qualification skills are a glaring weakness that needs urgent attention. The talented New Zealander, who made his much-anticipated debut with Red Bull in 2025, finds himself at a critical juncture. After a promising start with the Racing Bulls, Lawson’s fairytale quickly turned into a nightmare as he was demoted back to his former team after just two races.

However, there’s a glimmer of hope. Following his return to Racing Bulls, Lawson has shown signs of resurgence, particularly since the Monaco Grand Prix. The talented driver, who has managed to score points in four of the last seven races, underscores the pressing need for improvement in his qualifying performance. His current tally stands at 20 points, slightly trailing behind teammate Isack Hadjar, who has not only outperformed him in qualification rounds but also accumulated 22 points with four appearances in Q3.

The competition in the midfield is fiercer than ever, and as Lawson rightly points out, gaining positions during races is an uphill battle due to the minute differences in pace among the teams. “If I had to choose one area to improve, it would definitely be qualification,” Lawson stated emphatically. “With everyone so closely matched, even on tracks that are considered easier for overtaking, the lack of a significant speed advantage makes it extremely challenging to gain places during the race.”

He elaborated further on the critical nature of qualifying, saying, “Qualification is incredibly important; it essentially defines your entire weekend. Times when I’ve had a mediocre qualifying have directly correlated with our weekends not going well. Conversely, when I manage to qualify strongly, that’s when our performance shines.”

Lawson’s quest for improvement is clear: he aims to maximize his car’s potential in qualifying sessions to ensure he secures the best starting positions possible. “The main objective is to extract everything from the car, ensuring it is in the best spot for qualifying, and then for me, it’s about executing perfectly to deliver better results,” he concluded.

As the season progresses, all eyes will be on Lawson as he seeks to turn his qualification woes into triumphs. Will he rise to the challenge and cement his place among the elite in F1? The clock is ticking, and the stakes have never been higher!
