Ryan Blaney’s Historic Pole Position at Watkins Glen: A Milestone for Team Penske!

In a breathtaking twist of fate at Watkins Glen International, Ryan Blaney has secured pole position, propelling him to the forefront of Sunday’s race and marking a monumental achievement for Team Penske. This remarkable feat signifies the team’s 150th pole position in the illustrious history of the NASCAR Cup Series, placing Team Penske alongside racing titans like Hendrick Motorsports, Joe Gibbs Racing, and Petty Enterprises.

Blaney’s electrifying lap time of 71.960 seconds not only showcased his skill but also outpaced formidable competitors, including Shane van Gisbergen, who has dominated three out of four road course events this season. Team Penske’s other stars, Joey Logano and Austin Cindric, will kick off their race from the 11th and 13th positions, respectively, but all eyes will be on Blaney as he aims for glory.

NASCAR proudly heralded this achievement on social media, stating, “150 (Busch Light Pole) Awards for (Team Penske). The organization joins (Hendrick Motorsports), (Joe Gibbs Racing), and Petty Enterprises as just the fourth team in Cup Series history to reach that milestone.” This accolade not only cements Team Penske’s legacy but also elevates Blaney’s status in the world of motorsports.

This pole position at the 2.45-mile road course is Blaney’s second of the year, following his earlier triumph at the Atlanta Motor Speedway. More impressively, this marks the 15th pole of his career and his second on a road course, a testament to his continued evolution as a driver. This season, the #12 Team Penske driver has not only clinched a victory at Nashville Superspeedway but has also tallied eight top-five finishes and 11 top-10s. However, it’s worth noting that he shares the unfortunate distinction of having the most DNFs this season, tallying seven alongside Cody Ware after 23 races.

The excitement builds as the Go Bowling at The Glen is set to commence at 2:00 p.m. ET on Sunday. While Blaney is yet to taste victory at this iconic New York track, his best performance came in 2019 with a commendable fifth-place finish.

As the race approaches, Blaney is poised for a fierce showdown against Shane van Gisbergen, who is widely regarded as a top contender. Acknowledging the challenge ahead, Blaney expressed, “Ninety laps is going to be a little harder to beat him tomorrow, but gotta start somewhere.” He reflected on last year’s disappointing performance at Watkins Glen, stating, “We had an absolutely abysmal weekend here last year.”

This year, however, Blaney and his team have made significant strides, focusing on improving their performance and honing their skills for a better outcome. “We’ve worked really hard on where we need to get better here, where I need to do a better job, how can we improve our race cars,” he elaborated, highlighting the collaborative effort to enhance their competitiveness.

Last year’s race saw Blaney starting in the disheartening 30th position only to be forced to retire early due to a first-lap collision that required his #12 Ford to be towed. This year, with the pole position secured, Blaney is determined to rewrite his Watkins Glen story and lead Team Penske to yet another remarkable chapter in their racing saga. The stage is set, and the anticipation is palpable—will Blaney seize this golden opportunity? Only time will tell.
