IndyCar Star Santino Ferrucci Reveals Rookie Blunder After Epic “Double Bird” from NASCAR’s Josh Berry

Santino Ferrucci (14) fist bumps fans before the NTT IndyCar Series Farm to Finish 275 on July 13, 2025, at Iowa Speedway in Newton, Iowa. Alex Palou (10) won the race.

IndyCar Star Santino Ferrucci Exposes Rookie Blunder After Receiving Double Bird from NASCAR Rival!

In the high-octane world of motorsports, few rivalries are as electric as those found in NASCAR. But for Santino Ferrucci, a rising star in IndyCar, his most infamous moment of controversy took place far from the stock car scene. Flash back to 2018, when Ferrucci found himself at the center of a scandal during a Formula 2 race at Silverstone. In a shocking display of aggression, he intentionally crashed into his teammate Arjun Maini during the cooldown lap, leading to a four-race suspension and a hefty fine. Trident Racing didn’t hold back, condemning Ferrucci and his father for their “unsportsmanlike and above all uncivilized behavior.”

Fast forward to today, where Ferrucci has made his way into NASCAR’s Xfinity Series, and the drama continues. A recent clash with driver Josh Berry at Phoenix Raceway not only reignited memories of his tumultuous past but also solidified his reputation as a fierce competitor in a new arena. As Ferrucci recounted this pivotal encounter during a revealing conversation with the legendary Dale Earnhardt Jr., he reflected on how the cutthroat nature of stock car racing sharply contrasts with his IndyCar experiences.

When the subject of his infamous on-track skirmish with Berry came up, Ferrucci didn’t hold back. “I hadn’t realized what I had done,” he admitted, revealing the rookie error that led to the clash. “When I was racing and passing these guys, I didn’t realize that if you commit underneath, you’ve got to run the bottom.” The difference in racing etiquette between NASCAR and IndyCar was stark. In NASCAR’s tight confines, there’s an unspoken rule: stay in your lane after making a pass to avoid calamity. But Ferrucci, accustomed to the freedom of IndyCar, veered into trouble as he took the preferred line, sending Berry into the marbles and triggering a furious response.

Ferrucci’s spotter, Chris Lambert, warned him of impending retaliation. “He (Lambert) said, it looks like he’s going to come give you the one-finger salute. And I got the double bird. And I was like, wait, that was for me?” The double bird became a viral moment, emblematic of the raw emotions that fuel NASCAR’s competitive spirit.

Taking full responsibility for the incident, Ferrucci candidly acknowledged his lack of understanding of NASCAR’s unwritten rules. “I had no idea that that was wrong and not correct etiquette, especially that early in the race,” he reflected, highlighting his maturity in recognizing the gravity of the situation. Despite the unfortunate outcome, he owns this rookie blunder, stating, “Yeah, I take some blame for that.”

Meanwhile, Josh Berry, now a formidable force with Wood Brothers Racing, is enjoying a remarkable rise in the NASCAR Cup Series. Driving the iconic No. 21 Ford Mustang Dark Horse, he celebrated his first Cup victory at the Pennzoil 400 in Las Vegas, marking a historic moment for the Wood Brothers with their 101st Cup win. Berry’s impressive stats—one victory, two top-5 finishes, and leading 169 laps—underscore his evolution as a top-tier driver, a journey deeply rooted in his experience with JR Motorsports and the mentorship of Dale Earnhardt Jr.

Ferrucci’s journey in IndyCar has also been shaped by the formidable influence of racing magnate Roger Penske. In 2022, Penske’s team recognized Ferrucci’s raw talent, nearly bringing him on as a last-minute substitute for Josef Newgarden. Although that opportunity didn’t pan out, it significantly bolstered Ferrucci’s reputation, leading to a full-time seat with A.J. Foyt Racing. His performance improved dramatically, thanks to a technical partnership with Penske that provided enhanced setups and engineering support, resulting in a career-best ninth place in the standings.

As Ferrucci navigates the tumultuous waters of transitioning between racing disciplines, he faces the stark contrasts between the precision of IndyCar and the fierce aggression of NASCAR. His openness to learning from his mistakes and willingness to adapt set him apart in the fiercely competitive world of motorsports. With Roger Penske’s backing and his growing experience, Ferrucci is poised for a future that could unlock even greater achievements on the racetrack.

In a sport where every move can lead to glory or disaster, Santino Ferrucci’s journey is a testament to the relentless pursuit of excellence, proving that talent, resilience, and the ability to learn from one’s missteps are the true hallmarks of a champion.
