Williams Racing makes a bold move ahead of the 2026 Formula 1 season by appointing Axel Kruse as its chief operations director, snagging him from rival Sauber after his impressive 15-year tenure. Kruse, previously a BMW engineer during the team’s successful years from 2000 to 2005, is set to bring his expertise to Williams starting on September 1st, taking over from Fred Brousseau.
The team’s decision to bring in Kruse showcases their determination to climb back to the top of the F1 standings. With Williams facing challenging times in recent years, including finishing at the bottom of the teams’ table in 2022, this strategic hiring aims to steer the team towards success. Currently sitting in fifth place in the championship after 13 rounds in 2025, Williams is showing signs of improvement.
Team principal James Vowles expressed his excitement about Kruse joining the team, emphasizing the ongoing efforts to enhance Williams’ capabilities in pursuit of reclaiming their former glory. Vowles also thanked Brousseau for his contributions and wished him well as he departs for Canada after joining the team in 2023.
In addition to Kruse’s appointment, Matt Harman has been promoted to technical director – engineering, further solidifying Williams’ commitment to strengthening their team for the challenges ahead.
