Stellantis announced this Wednesday the decision to discontinue the hydrogen fuel cell technology development program. Due to the limited availability of hydrogen refueling infrastructure, high costs, and the need for stronger purchase incentives for consumers, the company does not foresee the adoption of hydrogen-powered light commercial vehicles before the end of the decade.
As a result, Stellantis will not proceed with the launch of the new Pro One hydrogen-powered vehicle line this year. Series production was scheduled to begin during the summer in Hordain, France, where new light commercial vehicles would be produced, and in Gliwice, Poland, where large commercial vehicles would be manufactured.
“In a context where the company is mobilizing to respond to demanding CO2 regulations in Europe, Stellantis has decided to discontinue the hydrogen fuel cell technology development program”, said Jean-Philippe Imparato, Chief Operating Officer for Extended Europe, in a statement. “The hydrogen market remains a niche segment, with no prospects for economic sustainability in the medium term. We need to make clear and responsible decisions to ensure our competitiveness and meet our customers’ expectations with our offensive in electric and hybrid passenger and light commercial vehicles.”
