Liam Lawson’s Future in Limbo: Red Bull’s Surprising Decision for 2026

In a startling development, Liam Lawson is expected to become the lead driver for Racing Bulls through to the end of the 2026 Formula 1 season, according to a well-known newspaper in New Zealand. This news follows Lawson’s journey within the Red Bull team, where he first replaced Sergio Pérez, then struggled alongside Max Verstappen and was replaced himself by Yuki Tsunoda after failing to score points in two races. Lawson has been competing with rookie Isack Hadjar, and he was the first to perform well for the team claiming 6th place at the Austrian GP, earning Lawson the team’s best result.

Notably, Tsunoda’s Red Bull prospects are equally as vexing; after five races without scoring, a substantial portion of his future appears to hinge on the remaining contests of the current season.

Additionally, there are rumors suggesting Arvid Lindblad might be able to come into the Racing Bulls fold if Tsunoda goes out and Hadjar gets promoted to the Red Bull main team. Lindblad, who is vying for the Formula 2 title during his rookie season, has captured the attention of several Red Bull executives, including Helmut Marko. Marko praised Lindblad’s pace, his technical contributions, and his conditioning, in particular, noting the RB21 Test where he had only lost to Verstappen by half a second during free practice. Given the number of comprehensive tests he’s completed, Lindblad is set to transform the Formula 1 landscape.

While the beginning of the 2026 season is still a long way off, it works well to build anticipation for the forthcoming storyline within Red Bull and Racing Bulls that will certainly further elevate the drama and competition within Formula 1. Look out for more updates as the racing community prepares for a wave of changes and unmatched racing action.

He finished runner-up in the 2017 Australian F4, 2018 ADAC F4 and 2019 Euroformula Open championships, before winning the Toyota Racing Series in 2019 with M2. He replaced Ricciardo full-time at the re-branded RB in 2024 from the United States Grand Prix onwards. Lawson was promoted to a full-time drive with parent team Red Bull for his 2025 campaign, replacing Sergio Pérez to partner Max Verstappen. Lawson was set to contracted to remain at Red Bull until at least the end of the 2025 season, but following the 2025 Chinese Grand Prix, he was dropped back to Racing Bulls for the remainder of the season, with Yuki Tsunoda promoted to his position. He currently wears jersey number 30. Current Season: 8 podium finishes, 3 race wins, 2 pole positions. Championship standings: 2nd place with 285 points. Best lap times: Sector records at 4 circuits.
