Street King: Shane van Gisbergen Makes NASCAR History with Chicago Sweep in Xfinity and Cup Series

Kiwi sensation dominates Windy City weekend, notches fourth win on Chicago streets and eyes Sonoma showdown

CHICAGO — Shane van Gisbergen just made NASCAR history — again.

On Sunday, the New Zealand driver etched his name into the record books by becoming only the second driver in NASCAR history to sweep both the Xfinity and Cup Series pole and race wins in the same weekend at the same track. And he did it in style, conquering the slick city streets of Chicago with a masterclass in precision and power.

Van Gisbergen led 26 of 75 laps to claim his second Cup Series victory of the season and his fourth NASCAR win on the Chicago street circuit, which has hosted six races (three Xfinity, three Cup) since its 2023 debut. With each turn, the three-time Australian Supercars champion continues to prove he’s not just a road-course ringer — he’s a rising force in stock car racing.

“It’s incredible,” van Gisbergen said after climbing from his Trackhouse Racing Chevrolet. “I love this place. The team gave me an amazing car, and to get the sweep here — it’s just unreal.”

CHICAGO CUP SERIES RESULTS – TOP 10

  1. Shane van Gisbergen
  2. Ty Gibbs
  3. Tyler Reddick
  4. Denny Hamlin
  5. Kyle Busch
  6. AJ Allmendinger
  7. Ryan Preece
  8. Alex Bowman
  9. Austin Hill
  10. Ross Chastain

The win marks Van Gisbergen’s second Cup victory of 2025, following his breakthrough performance at the Mexico road course last month. With momentum on his side, he’ll head west next weekend for a shot at back-to-back wins on another twisting track: Sonoma Raceway in California.

A Race Without Rain — Finally

For the first time in three Cup races at Chicago, Mother Nature stayed away. After two years of rain-soaked drama, Sunday’s race ran dry, allowing the drivers to push to the limit in one of NASCAR’s most unique and challenging environments.

Stage 1 was captured by Michael McDowell, while Ryan Blaney took Stage 2 honors before falling back in the final run.

And after a dismal stretch with only one top-10 in his last 10 starts, Kyle Busch found redemption with a hard-earned fifth-place finish — signaling a possible turnaround for the two-time Cup champion.

What’s Next?

The NASCAR Cup Series shifts gears and heads to Sonoma Raceway next Sunday, July 13 at 3:30 p.m. ET, for another high-stakes battle on the road.

Can van Gisbergen keep his hot streak alive and stake his claim as NASCAR’s undisputed road course king? One thing’s for sure — the rest of the field has been put on notice.

History made. Records shattered. And the Shane van Gisbergen show rolls on.
