Former F1 powerhouse eyes Alpine takeover amidst team turmoil

In a shocking twist of events, former F1 team principal, Otmar Szafnauer, is eyeing a major buyout of the struggling Alpine F1 team. Sources have revealed to RacingNews365 the potential plans of Szafnauer, who has an extensive background in leading teams such as Force India, Racing Point, and Aston Martin.

With the Alpine team currently in disarray following the departure of key figures and facing uncertainty about its leadership, Szafnauer sees an opportunity to make a significant move back into the forefront of Formula 1. The recent confirmation of his collaboration with North American investors hints at a possible bid to introduce a 12th team to the grid.

However, the road to expansion in F1 has been a rocky one, with the recent approval of the 11th team, Cadillac, taking two years to materialize. This suggests that any prospects of a new team joining the grid could be years away, prompting Szafnauer to explore the option of acquiring an existing team instead.

Reports indicate that Szafnauer had previously approached Luca de Meo, the former CEO of Renault Group, which owns Alpine, regarding a potential buyout. Despite initial discussions, de Meo declined the offer, leaving the team without a clear direction in the wake of his departure.

Alpine has been navigating choppy waters in recent months, with the team principal position vacant since the exit of Oliver Oakes. The temporary management by Flavio Briatore is set to transition to Steve Nielsen in September, adding to the uncertainty surrounding the team’s future.

The impending departure of de Meo and the shift from Renault to Mercedes engines for Alpine further complicate the team’s outlook. Szafnauer’s interest in the team raises questions about its valuation in a market where F1 team values have been soaring.

Despite the challenges, Szafnauer remains determined, emphasizing the financial backing and seriousness of the investors involved in the potential takeover. As the F1 landscape continues to evolve, the prospect of a major shake-up with Alpine at the center looms large.
