In a shocking turn of events, George Russell found himself battling through a “perfect storm” of setbacks during the F1 Austrian GP, leaving him in a position of “damage limitation” for the Mercedes team.
Despite a triumphant victory in Canada just two weeks ago, Mercedes struggled once again, this time grappling with the scorching temperatures at the Spielberg circuit. The team faced numerous challenges, including Andrea Kimi Antonelli’s crash on the opening lap, pushing Russell to carry the weight for Mercedes. However, even with an early overtake on Lewis Hamilton’s Ferrari, Russell slipped back to fifth place, more than half a minute behind his former teammate.
Speaking on the grueling weekend, Russell expressed his frustration, stating, “I was expecting a bad race and it was worse than I even could imagine.” He highlighted the harsh conditions of the track, emphasizing the extreme temperatures and the team’s ongoing battle with tire overheating issues.
Despite the setback, Mercedes managed to stay just one point behind Ferrari in the constructors’ championship, with Red Bull also suffering a blow as Antonelli collided with Max Verstappen, resulting in no points for the team.
Looking ahead to the upcoming race at Silverstone, Russell remains hopeful for cooler weather conditions that could potentially favor Mercedes.
