Akio Toyoda Triumphs at Nürburgring 24-Hour Race Honoring Hiromu Naruse

Toyota’s Chairman, Akio Toyoda, made a thrilling return to the Nürburgring 24 Hours race, honoring the legacy of the late Master Driver Hiromu Naruse. Toyoda, the influential figure in the automotive industry and grandson of Toyota’s founder, Kiichiro Toyoda, showcased his passion for crafting top-notch vehicles by competing in the grueling race.

Behind the wheel of the Toyota Gazoo Rookie Racing GR Yaris, Toyoda navigated the challenging 12.9-mile track with 73 corners, a track that has been instrumental in shaping Toyota’s vehicles for over five decades. His determination and drive led him to a commendable 52nd position out of 88 cars, proving his commitment to the pursuit of excellence in car manufacturing.

The race not only symbolized Toyoda’s personal dedication but also paid tribute to the remarkable journey of Hiromu Naruse, a pivotal figure in Toyota’s motorsport history. Naruse’s passion for driving and relentless pursuit of perfection left a lasting impact on Toyoda, who acknowledged the invaluable lessons learned under Naruse’s mentorship.

Despite initial resistance from Toyota’s hierarchy towards executives participating in races, Toyoda’s resolve to follow his racing dreams prevailed. Adopting the race name ‘Morizo’ and spearheading Gazoo.com, a platform for transforming standard cars into racing machines, Toyoda embarked on his racing career at the Nürburgring in 2007, laying the foundation for his enduring love for competition.

The emotional significance of the Nürburgring for Toyoda was heightened by the memory of Naruse, who tragically lost his life in a road accident at Nürburg 14 years ago. Toyoda’s pilgrimage to the track is marked by a solemn tribute to Naruse, a friend and mentor who played a pivotal role in shaping him into a skilled race driver.

Reflecting on his recent race experience, Toyoda expressed gratitude for achieving his goal amidst challenging conditions, emphasizing the crucial role of following Naruse’s guidance on the track. The successful completion of the race in the GR Yaris underscored Toyoda’s perseverance and the collaborative effort of the Toyota team in pushing boundaries to create exceptional vehicles.

As Toyoda looks towards the future with optimism and a sense of accomplishment, his journey at the Nürburgring serves as a testament to the enduring spirit of innovation and excellence driving Toyota’s pursuit of automotive perfection.
