Toto Wolff Unleashes Fury: Mercedes Refuses to Bow Down to Racing Championship Rivals!
Mercedes’ powerhouse figure, Toto Wolff, has sparked controversy by slamming the door on the possibility of Mercedes joining the Hypercar class in the World Endurance Championship (WEC), despite pressure from F1 competitors. The Brackley-based team’s principal has pointed to a specific reason driving this decision – the contentious Balance of Power (BoP) system in WEC.
Wolff made it clear that Mercedes wants no part in the BoP arrangement, which he believes stifles true competition by imposing restrictions on power, consumption, weight, and even driver abilities. The team’s focus remains on their GT3 car, with plans for a new model in 2027, making the Hypercar class an unfavorable prospect at the moment.
In a bold statement to Bloomberg’s Hot Pursuit! podcast, Wolff outlined his vision for a fairer system in WEC, one that would allow teams to push the limits without external interference. He proposed a financial cap on spending, rather than BoP adjustments, to ensure a level playing field and genuine racing competition.
“If that were the case, then we could look at a programme. Currently, given the BoP, which allows officials to judge that you are too fast, who add 10kg to you and then take it away from another car the next day, it’s not for us,” Wolff expressed, clearly stating Mercedes’ stance on the matter.
