Red Bull F1 in immediate crisis

Red Bull F1 em crise imediata

Red Bull reaches a fragile agreement in an attempt to create a sense of calm within its Formula 1 team. However, the team remains susceptible to divisions among its senior leaders, and its team principal faces a new challenge.

After enduring a month of intense scrutiny leading up to the launch of their car and the opening of the season, Christian Horner likely welcomed the break before the Australian Grand Prix with relief. Unfortunately, even during this brief respite, reports emerged that Horner’s accuser has appealed Red Bull’s decision to dismiss his complaint against him. Additionally, the accuser has lodged a separate formal complaint with the FIA.

This ongoing saga has caused a major rift within Red Bull and has become a highly controversial story off the track. The only difference now is that these stories are emerging while the entire Formula 1 community is gathered in Melbourne.

Despite Horner’s insistence that it is time to move on, he will face further questions and scrutiny in Melbourne. The Saudi Arabian Grand Prix ended with Red Bull Racing leadership emphasizing unity and the parent company expressing satisfaction with their management. Helmut Marko and Horner are not at odds, and the majority owner of Red Bull has not been swayed to withdraw support for Horner. Therefore, Horner will continue to lead for the Australian Grand Prix and likely beyond.

While the team itself seems unaffected by the turmoil, the leadership is on shaky ground. Long-term coexistence between various factions within the organization appears unlikely without a more substantial reconciliation. Thus, the current truce is fragile.

The spotlight will once again be on Red Bull Racing when Formula 1 resumes in Australia. The central issue that fueled this controversy will once again come to the forefront.

However, the pressure is not only on Horner and Red Bull. The main stakeholders in Formula 1 will eventually have to break their silence.

The extent of the turmoil within the governing body, the FIA, is known only to a few. Whistleblower reports have emerged, alleging interference from president Mohammed Ben Sulayem in crucial matters. These reports followed rumors that Ben Sulayem tried to secure a public vote of confidence from Max Verstappen for Horner. The FIA has remained non-interventionist throughout this ordeal, despite indications that both parties wanted access to Red Bull’s investigation report on Horner.

The lack of transparency from Red Bull has limited the actions and comments of the FIA. Many critics of Horner, including rivals in the paddock, believe that the FIA should conduct its own review. Now that Horner’s accuser has lodged a formal complaint with the FIA, there may be an opportunity for a direct response. However, the FIA’s track record of transparency does not inspire confidence.

Irrespective of the actions or omissions of the FIA, it is now more directly involved in the narrative, as Horner’s accuser appeals Red Bull’s decision and seeks to reopen the case.

The issue that was thought to have been resolved before the start of the season in Bahrain is still very much alive. Horner and Red Bull hope to avoid further conflicts not only this weekend, but also in the foreseeable future.
