Isack Hadjar Slapped with Grid Penalty for Infuriating Carlos Sainz

A dramatic turn of events unfolded at the Canadian Grand Prix as Isack Hadjar received a three-place grid penalty for obstructing Carlos Sainz during qualifying. The Red Bull Formula 1 rookie’s impressive ninth-place qualification was overshadowed by a controversial incident that left Sainz seething.

During Q1, Hadjar’s failure to yield to Sainz on a flying lap led to a collision at the Turn 6-7 chicane, ultimately sabotaging Sainz’s qualifying session and relegating him to 17th place. An irate Sainz expressed his frustration, stating, “That completely blows your qualifying away and means your weekend is destroyed.”

Initially taken aback by the accusations, Hadjar claimed he was misled by his team regarding Sainz’s intentions and attempted to make way for the Williams driver belatedly. Despite his explanation, Hadjar was penalized three grid places, pushing him down to 12th and reshuffling the starting positions for other drivers.

The fallout extended to Charles Leclerc, who also criticized Hadjar for impeding his final lap in Q3, coincidentally at the same corner where the incident with Sainz occurred. However, the stewards dismissed Leclerc’s complaint, attributing it to a mere “dirty air effect” rather than intentional obstruction.

As tensions ran high on the track, emotions simmered down post-qualifying, with Leclerc retracting his harsh remarks and acknowledging the challenges of navigating traffic during a hot lap. “Sometimes depending on where you are catching a car, it can have a huge influence on the lap,” Leclerc reflected.

The repercussions of Hadjar’s grid penalty and the subsequent fallout with Sainz and Leclerc have set the stage for a contentious race day at the Canadian Grand Prix. With relationships strained and tempers flaring, the dynamics within the F1 circuit have been irrevocably altered, promising a gripping and unpredictable main event.
