Nyck De Vries Challenges Traditional Wisdom: Qualifying Obsession or Race Strategy Masterstroke?

Nyck De Vries Slams Qualifying Obsession at 24 Hours of Le Mans

In a shocking turn of events, Nyck De Vries of Toyota has come out swinging against the excessive emphasis placed on qualifying at the prestigious 24 Hours of Le Mans race. Despite qualifying in 16th position, just missing out on the Hyperpole top 15, De Vries believes that the focus on qualifying is overblown and that race pace is the true determining factor for success.

The 30-year-old Dutchman expressed his disbelief, stating, “It amazes me how much focus everyone puts on qualifying when the race lasts 24 hours.” He further added, “What really matters is pace—if you’re not quick, you’ll end up at the back anyway. Not going to Hyperpole could even be an advantage.”

De Vries went on to explain that starting towards the back may actually provide benefits such as avoiding early race incidents. Despite his seemingly defensive stance, De Vries highlighted Toyota’s consistent race performance, even after struggling in qualifying throughout the FIA World Endurance Championship season.

Contrary to his teammate Mike Conway’s earlier remarks, De Vries expressed concerns about Toyota’s current race pace, noting, “Right now, we don’t feel quick enough and aren’t comfortable.” He acknowledged the challenges posed by varying run plans, fuel loads, tires, and traffic, which make direct comparisons with competitors difficult.

The Dutch driver refrained from elaborating on the specific reasons for their lack of pace but hinted at the car’s struggles in achieving top speed and navigating high-speed corners. Despite excelling in medium and low-speed sections, Toyota faces stiff competition from rivals like Porsche and Cadillac in different aspects of the track.

De Vries also emphasized the importance of tire management during the grueling 24-hour race, particularly highlighting the challenges of warming up tires during subsequent stints. With the race set to kick off with Toyota starting in 16th position, the team faces an uphill battle to fight for victory.

As the tension mounts and anticipation builds for the legendary endurance race, all eyes will be on Nyck De Vries and Toyota to see if they can defy the odds and make their mark on the iconic event.

Stay tuned for more updates as the 24 Hours of Le Mans unfolds, with twists, turns, and adrenaline-pumping action guaranteed to keep fans on the edge of their seats.
