Lewis Hamilton Slams F1’s New Circuits as Madrid Gears Up for Grand Prix Debut

Formula 1 is in for a major shakeup with Madrid set to make its debut on the 2026 calendar, but not everyone is thrilled about it. Seven-time F1 champion Lewis Hamilton has expressed his doubts about the new ‘Madring Circuit,’ criticizing the recent trend of subpar track constructions in the sport.

Hamilton’s skepticism stems from his belief that most new circuits fail to deliver the excitement and challenge that drivers and fans crave. He bluntly stated, “Building new circuits is very, very hit and miss. 90 plus per cent of the time it’s worse.” This critical viewpoint comes as F1 unveils the layout of the ambitious 22-corner street circuit in the heart of Madrid, sparking anticipation among fans.

The British driver’s concerns extend to the potential exclusion of the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, a staple on the F1 calendar since 1991. Hamilton, along with fellow driver Max Verstappen, emphasizes the importance of preserving F1’s heritage and iconic tracks like Barcelona.

Verstappen, known for his outspoken nature, has also voiced support for retaining classic circuits. He expressed his fondness for Barcelona’s track layout and the overall experience it offers to both drivers and fans. The Dutch driver’s sentiments align with Hamilton’s, highlighting the shared apprehension about losing historic venues in favor of newer, unproven tracks.

Despite the excitement surrounding Madrid’s new street circuit, which comes with a hefty price tag of nearly $100 million, the debate over the future of traditional circuits continues to divide opinions within the F1 community. While some see the introduction of modern tracks as a necessary evolution for the sport, others like Hamilton and Verstappen advocate for striking a balance between innovation and tradition.

As F1 prepares for the arrival of Madrid’s Grand Prix, the clash between old and new in the world of motorsport intensifies. Will the allure of a cutting-edge street circuit overshadow the legacy of beloved tracks like Barcelona? Only time will tell as the countdown to the 2026 season begins.
