Keke Rosberg Battles Health Crisis: F1 Legend Grapples with Long Covid and Failing Eyesight

Formula 1 Icon Keke Rosberg Battles Severe Health Challenges

Former Formula 1 champion Keke Rosberg is facing a tough battle with serious health issues, which include long-term effects of Covid-19 and worsening eyesight. The 1982 F1 drivers’ champion, known for his victory with Williams, has been absent from grand prix events for quite some time, especially since stepping away from the public eye when his son, Nico, entered the F1 scene by joining Mercedes in 2010.

In a rare interview with Finnish publication APU, the 76-year-old opened up about his decision to retreat from the limelight, expressing that he felt out of place in the F1 world and was constantly overshadowed by questions about his son. Rosberg candidly stated, “I couldn’t continue. I categorically ended everything and became a hermit.”

Despite his own successful career, which includes multiple grand prix wins and his championship title, Rosberg emphasized that his son’s triumph over Lewis Hamilton in the 2016 season was the pinnacle of his achievements. “Definitely Nico’s world championship title,” he affirmed when asked. “Especially in terms of our family history, that was a milestone.”

The onset of the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020 took a toll on Rosberg’s solitary life, with lingering effects that continue to impact his health. Speaking about his battle with long Covid, he highlighted the challenges faced by many individuals dealing with the aftermath of the virus. “The understanding of long Covid is still largely unknown,” Rosberg shared. “There are a great many people who are suffering severely from it.”

The isolation brought about by the pandemic has exacerbated Rosberg’s condition, leaving him with dwindling energy levels and a sense of unfulfilled tasks. He shared, “I have hardly any energy left. I used to have a list of things that still needed to be done. I still have a list – but with things I won’t be able to do anymore.”

Furthermore, the F1 legend mentioned seeking medical advice recently, particularly regarding his declining eyesight, indicating that his health struggles are multi-faceted. Keke Rosberg’s journey serves as a reminder of the challenges faced by even the most celebrated figures in times of personal adversity.
