Sam Bird secured McLaren’s first victory in Formula E by pulling off a surprising maneuver at the last moment over his former teammate Mitch Evans during the 2024 São Paulo E-Prix. This marks Bird’s third week competing for McLaren, after a challenging period alongside Evans at Jaguar. Bird triumphantly returned to the top of the Formula E podium, a feat he had last achieved at the second New York E-Prix in July 2021. Starting from fifth on the grid, Bird quickly moved up to the front of the pack in the early stages of the race, which witnessed the expected pack-style racing. However, he faced strong competition from Evans, as well as the factory Porsches and reigning champion Jake Dennis. As the race neared its end, it became a fierce battle between Evans and Bird, with the addition of three extra laps due to multiple safety car periods. Evans managed to overtake Bird with a few laps remaining, initially suggesting he would pull away from his rival. However, Bird stayed tenaciously with Evans and left those behind him in his wake. On the final lap, Bird executed a bold move around the outside of Evans in the long left turn, a move that will surely be remembered in Formula E history. This victory brings Bird’s total wins to 12, placing him third overall and just one win behind Formula E pioneers Sebastien Buemi and Lucas di Grassi. Evans appeared to struggle with battery wear, leading him to take a defensive inside approach, leaving Bird no choice but to attempt the outside pass. Oliver Rowland also showed brilliance on the final lap, securing a podium spot for another Nissan-powered vehicle. He managed to overtake the factory Porsche of Pascal Wehrlein and Jake Dennis, who started on pole, to secure the final podium position. Antonio Felix da Costa regained his form and scored his first points of the season with a respectable sixth place, ahead of the DS Penskes of Jean-Eric Vergne and Stoffel Vandoorne, whose race pace did not match their qualifying performance. Despite facing a significant penalty, Maximilian Guenther made an impressive comeback and scored two points with a ninth-place finish, narrowly beating Buemi.
