ACAP: sales of electrified vehicles soar 50% in May.

The Automobile Association of Portugal (ACAP) revealed that the sale of light passenger electric vehicles recorded a growth of 50% in May compared to the same month in 2025.

In a statement, ACAP added that in the fifth month of 2025, 13,583 new light passenger electric, plug-in, and hybrid electric cars were registered in Portugal.

Thus, from January to May 2025, the registrations of light passenger vehicles of this type totaled 57,983 units, which resulted in a positive variation of 35.2% compared to the same period in 2024. 

Meanwhile, sales of 100% electric vehicles increased by 42.3% in May compared to the same month in 2024, with 4,478 new light passenger vehicles registered.

Overall, in the first five months of 2025, there was an increase of 32.4% compared to the same period in the previous year, with 20,375 fully electric cars registered.

Additionally, the market for electrified light commercial vehicles recorded a positive evolution of 100.8% in May compared to the same month last year, with 237 units registered. Cumulatively, this market reached 1,266 units, representing a growth of 15.7% compared to 2024.

On the other hand, sales of 100% electric light commercial vehicles recorded a growth of 100% in the fifth month of the year, according to ACAP data. Thus, from January to May 2025, there was a growth of 15.3% compared to the same period in the previous year.

The heavy vehicle market, which includes passenger and cargo types, recorded a decrease of 45.5% in May compared to the same month in 2024, with only 6 vehicles registered, all of them 100% electric. In cumulative terms, in the five months of 2025, there was a positive evolution of 14% compared to the same period in 2024, with 49 vehicles registered.
