Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla, stepped down from his advisory role at the White House last week, and now President Donald Trump has issued a warning that Tesla, like other American car manufacturers, needs to build, including all its parts, in the United States, instead of manufacturing parts abroad.
Trump’s comments came in response to a question about tariffs that hurt companies like Tesla, which import parts for their cars from other countries.
“He will eventually build the entire car here. That’s practically what he does.”, Trump said, referring to Musk. “All manufacturers will also need to produce their parts here.”
“It bothered me that they would produce one part of the car in Canada, another in Mexico, and another part in Europe and send them everywhere, and no one knew what was going on.”, Trump added. “But next year, they will need to have everything built in the United States. That’s what we want.”
Remember that Trump imposed a 25% tariff on imported vehicles and all parts for car assembly, which, according to the automotive industry, will harm the supply chain and increase car prices.
