Chase Elliott Pushes for NASCAR Power Boost Amidst Driver Demands

NASCAR Cup Series driver Chase Elliott drives during practice for the Cracker Barrel 400 at Nashville Superspeedway in Lebanon, Tenn., Saturday, May 31, 2025.

Revolutionary Changes Coming to NASCAR: More Horsepower in the Works

Get ready, NASCAR fans, because a major shake-up could be on the horizon! NASCAR officials are contemplating a significant increase in horsepower from the current 670HP to a whopping 750HP, particularly for short tracks. The timeline for this change? Brace yourself, it could happen as soon as before the conclusion of the 2025 season.

The buzz around the potential horsepower boost was confirmed by none other than NASCAR’s senior vice president of competition, Elton Sawyer, during an interview with SiriusXM NASCAR Radio. Sawyer emphasized the collaborative effort among industry stakeholders, expressing excitement about the positive engagement and discussions taking place.

The push for more power on the tracks stems from feedback from Cup drivers and teams, who have been vocal about the need for a change to enhance the racing experience, especially on short tracks. Drivers like Josh Berry, the victor at Las Vegas earlier this year, have underscored the necessity for a significant horsepower increase to invigorate competition and improve overtaking opportunities.

Even 2020 NASCAR Cup Series champion Chase Elliott weighed in on the potential horsepower hike, highlighting the complexities involved in balancing performance upgrades with engine manufacturers’ considerations for longevity and reliability. The negotiation process among manufacturers like Chevrolet, Toyota, and Ford adds another layer of intrigue to the development, with each party vying for a competitive edge while striving for consensus on the power increase.

Driver Ryan Preece echoed the sentiments of many, advocating for more horsepower to elevate the driving challenge and inject excitement into races. Preece pointed to iconic races like the Coca-Cola 600 and North Wilkesboro as examples of thrilling competitions that captivated fans, emphasizing the role of strategy and dynamic racing elements in delivering an entertaining spectacle.

As NASCAR explores the feasibility of ramping up horsepower levels, the prospect of witnessing faster speeds, intense battles, and enhanced on-track action looms on the horizon. With drivers, teams, and officials aligning on the potential benefits of this transformative change, the future of NASCAR racing promises to be faster, fiercer, and more adrenaline-pumping than ever before.
