Max Verstappen’s Future at Red Bull: What Does the Contract Clause Reveal?

In a shocking turn of events, Max Verstappen’s future at Red Bull seems to be sealed, at least until 2026, due to a hidden contract clause that could prevent a surprise switch to another Formula 1 team. This clause stipulates that if Verstappen maintains his position in the top four of the championship standings by the end of the 2025 Austrian Grand Prix, his exit option will be nullified.

Currently sitting comfortably in third place with 136 points, a significant 57-point lead over fifth place, Charles Leclerc, the Dutch driver is well on his way to solidifying his position within the top four. If he manages to uphold a margin of at least 50 points over fifth place by the conclusion of the Spanish Grand Prix in Barcelona, the performance-based release clause in his contract will no longer be a factor.

Although there were previous speculations linking Verstappen to Aston Martin and more recently to Mercedes, it appears that his stay at Red Bull for 2026 is all but confirmed. Talks of a potential move have dwindled, especially with Mercedes’ focus on negotiating with George Russell, and Verstappen’s consistent performance on the track only reinforces the likelihood of him remaining with Red Bull.

The clause in Verstappen’s contract, which previously included a trigger linked to the departure of Helmut Marko, now hinges solely on his championship position as the sole means of an exit strategy, at least for the upcoming 2026 season. With the clause set to expire before the summer break, Red Bull can proceed with confidence, knowing that their star driver is fully committed to their long-term plans.

In light of the impending regulation changes in 2026, retaining Verstappen is a significant win for Red Bull, ensuring continuity and competitiveness for the team. Barring any unforeseen circumstances or drastic shifts in the championship standings, it is almost certain that Verstappen will continue to lead the charge for Red Bull in the upcoming seasons.
