Alonso’s Monaco Misfortune: Another Major Opportunity Lost in Aston Martin Fiasco

Fernando Alonso Reveals Shocking Engine Problem Leading to Monaco Grand Prix Retirement

In a jaw-dropping revelation, Fernando Alonso has disclosed the precise cause behind his retirement from the Monaco Grand Prix, likening it to a notorious issue faced by Daniel Ricciardo back in 2018. The Spanish driver, who was running in the points, was forced to pull off at Rascasse on Lap 36 due to an engine problem, prolonging his unfortunate streak of not scoring any points since the start of the 2025 season. This marks the worst start to a season for Alonso since his debut year in 2001, despite managing to secure 11th-place finishes in Japan, Saudi Arabia, and Imola.

Alonso shed light on the reason for his DNF, explaining how it mirrored the challenges Ricciardo encountered three years ago. “I had the problem with the engine since Lap 15, I didn’t have the air system, the electrical part, so I was like Daniel in 2018,” he shared with the media. Despite being down by 160 bhp, Alonso managed to maintain reasonable lap times in Monaco, aiming for a P6 finish until it became unattainable. The seasoned driver emphasized that his misfortune was not a stroke of bad luck but a technical setback.

Responding to inquiries about his lack of points in the current season, Alonso hinted at being willing to sacrifice the ongoing year if it meant Aston Martin could contend for the championship next season. “For me, it doesn’t really change anything to finish P8 in Barcelona or Canada, and scoring eight points or 22 points this year doesn’t change much,” he expressed, underlining his focus on the future and the regulatory changes ahead.

Amidst the anticipation for the Spanish Grand Prix, Alonso’s revelations have stirred up the Formula 1 community, with fans eagerly awaiting his comeback and Aston Martin’s potential resurgence in the upcoming seasons. The stage is set for a thrilling showdown in the world of motorsports as the seasoned driver navigates through challenges to secure his path to victory.
