Ross Chastain Shocks the NASCAR World with Unprecedented Victory at Coca-Cola 600

In a jaw-dropping turn of events at the 2025 Coca-Cola 600, Ross Chastain rewrote NASCAR history by clinching victory after starting dead last in a backup car. This remarkable win marked the end of a 56-year drought since a Cup driver last triumphed from the official last-place starting position in 1969 at Richmond.

Chastain’s exceptional feat distinguished him from other drivers who have won races after starting at the rear due to penalties or disqualified qualifying times. What set him apart was his starting position at the absolute bottom of the grid, a result of not posting a qualifying time following a crash during Saturday’s practice session.

Behind the wheel of the No. 1 Trackhouse Racing Chevrolet, Chastain embarked on a thrilling journey from 40th place to clinch the top spot, overcoming early obstacles to secure a playoff berth with his first win of the season. This victory positioned him as the first racer to achieve such a remarkable feat since Bobby Allison in 1969 at Richmond.

Chastain’s Cinderella story unfolded at the Charlotte Motor Speedway in a grueling 400-lap race that tested both skill and endurance. Despite a rocky start that saw him blow a tire and wreck during final practice, Chastain’s team worked tirelessly to prepare a backup car overnight, propelling him to the starting line behind renowned drivers Kyle Busch and Erik Jones.

The race witnessed a nail-biting 34 lead changes among 18 drivers and eight caution periods covering 52 laps. Chastain faced adversity early on, being involved in a multi-car incident and briefly falling a lap behind. However, strategic maneuvers and a fortunate wave-around under caution propelled him back into contention.

Through sheer determination and skill, Chastain steadily climbed the ranks, showcasing his prowess during long green-flag runs and skillful pit stops. By Lap 395, he made a daring move to overtake the leader, William Byron, at Turn 2, ultimately securing victory by a margin of 0.673 seconds.

Chastain’s extraordinary win not only marked Trackhouse Racing’s first triumph of the season but also solidified his status as a force to be reckoned with in the NASCAR world. In a season where victory had eluded him thus far, Chastain’s unparalleled comeback from adversity serves as a testament to his unwavering resolve and talent behind the wheel.
