Ryan Preece Calls for Race Format Revolution: Demands Longer Coca Cola 600 Stages

Ryan Preece Slams Coca Cola 600 Stage Lengths and Calls for Change in Race Format

NASCAR driver Ryan Preece didn’t hold back when sharing his thoughts on the stage lengths for the Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway. Preece criticized the ‘cut and dry’ 100-lap stages, calling for a shake-up in the race format to add more excitement and unpredictability to the 600-mile event.

Unlike the traditional three-stage format, the Coca-Cola 600 features four equal stages of 100 laps each, pushing teams into a predictable strategy of a single pit stop per stage. Preece highlighted the monotony of the current format, suggesting that longer stage lengths, like a 150-lap segment, could spice things up and introduce new challenges for drivers and teams.

Speaking to the media, Preece expressed his dissatisfaction with the current setup, stating, “It’s kind of cut and dry right now with it being 100 laps, 100 laps, 100 laps, 100 laps. It’s going to be you need to pit once throughout that cycle and that’ll be it. So, you need a car that’s going to have some really good long run pace. It would be interesting if we had a 150 lap segment. You know, it would kind of change things up there.”

As Preece gears up for Sunday’s race at Charlotte Motor Speedway, starting from the 28th position on the grid, he is eager to see how the race unfolds with the current stage lengths. His teammate Brad Keselowski will start further back in 35th place, while Chase Briscoe secured the pole position during Saturday’s qualifying session.

Fans can catch all the action live on Prime Video at 6 PM ET or tune in for radio updates on Sirius XM to witness the high-speed drama unfold at one of NASCAR’s most prestigious events.

Reflecting on his recent performance in the All-Star Open, where he finished 11th after a penalty dropped him out of contention, Preece highlighted the visibility issues with the ‘choose cone’ marking on the track. The NASCAR driver raised concerns about the clarity of the signage, which led to his penalty and subsequent setback in the race.

Preece’s competitive spirit remains unwavering as he prepares for the upcoming challenges on the track, determined to climb up the driver standings with his RFK Racing team. Currently sitting in 15th place with 251 points and four top-10 finishes, Preece is poised to make a strong comeback and leave his mark on the NASCAR circuit.
