Monaco GP Chaos: Hamilton’s Team Radio Mishap Leads to Verstappen Disruption!

A notable incident during the qualifying session for the 2025 Monaco Grand Prix saw Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton receive a three-place grid penalty for impeding Max Verstappen in Q1. The event, which took place on Saturday, sparked immediate discussion and altered the starting lineup for Sunday’s race.

The incident occurred when Hamilton, on a slow lap, inadvertently obstructed Verstappen, who was on a crucial push lap. Investigations by the race stewards revealed that the core issue stemmed from a critical miscommunication on Hamilton’s Mercedes team radio. Hamilton’s race engineer initially informed him that Verstappen was on a fast lap, prompting the Briton to move aside. However, a subsequent message incorrectly stated that Verstappen was “slowing down,” leading Hamilton to resume accelerating and inadvertently move back towards the racing line as the Red Bull approached.

Despite the stewards acknowledging that the incorrect information from his team was the cause of the impeding, they determined that the circumstances did not amount to a mitigating factor against the standard penalty for such an offense. As a result, Lewis Hamilton, who had qualified fourth, will now start the Monaco Grand Prix from seventh position, promoting Max Verstappen, Racing Bulls’ Isack Hadjar, and Aston Martin’s Fernando Alonso one place each.

Both drivers discussed the incident after the session, with Verstappen expressing sympathy for Hamilton, stating, “I know it’s not his fault,” but also emphasizing that such impeding incidents typically warrant a penalty. This dramatic turn in qualifying has added another layer of intrigue to an already intense Monaco Grand Prix weekend, ensuring discussions among fans and experts ahead of Sunday’s main event.
