Formula 1 Driver Liam Lawson Compares Upcoming F1 Movie to Top Gun Blockbuster
In a thrilling revelation, Racing Bulls driver Liam Lawson delves into his insights on the highly anticipated F1 movie, drawing an intriguing parallel to the iconic blockbuster Top Gun. Directed by Joseph Kosinski, who also helmed the 2022 sequel to Top Gun, “Top Gun: Maverick,” the upcoming F1 movie promises to captivate audiences with a riveting depiction of the sport.
During a recent interview with Motorsport.com and other media outlets ahead of the Monaco Grand Prix weekend, Lawson shared his thoughts after attending a private screening of the F1 movie along with fellow Formula 1 peers. Drawing inspiration from fighter pilots watching Top Gun, Lawson expressed his perspective on the film.
Despite acknowledging potential flaws, Lawson emphasized the movie’s overall brilliance, likening the viewing experience to that of watching Top Gun. He remarked, “You can always find holes and poke holes and things, but I think it’s a movie at the end of the day. I think the movie’s incredible, and I think that’s what most people are going to see when they watch this movie as well.”
When questioned about the movie’s potential to become a classic in the motorsport genre, Lawson exuded confidence in its future success. The New Zealand driver predicted, “I think it’s going to be huge when it comes out. I think it honestly has the potential to be one of the biggest movies of the year, for sure.”
Lawson’s sentiments resonate with several other F1 drivers, with Sauber’s Nico Hulkenberg also sharing positive feedback. Hulkenberg emphasized the importance of appreciating the broader narrative portrayed in the film, rather than nitpicking minor inaccuracies. He stated, “It’s not about the fine details that everything is accurate, but I think it’s still a new fresh perspective, telling the public what the teams or drivers do, what goes on, how much goes in, so it builds more of a picture again, I think. Some good actors in there too.”
Set for a global release on June 25, 2025, with dates for the United States and Canada following shortly after on June 27, the F1 movie has generated immense anticipation within the motorsport community. With Lawson’s endorsement and positive reviews from fellow drivers, the film is poised to make a significant impact upon its debut, offering audiences an exhilarating glimpse into the world of Formula 1.
