“Renault available to provide technology to competitors to make cars cheaper.”

Renault 100% elétrico já tem preço para Portugal

The French automotive manufacturer, Renault, is available to provide technology to other brands in order to contribute to the increase of total vehicle production with shared resources, making cars cheaper to produce.

According to “Reuters“, the statement was revealed by Luca De Meo, CEO of Renault, during a parliamentary hearing in Rome, Italy, where he made it clear that the French brand was not discouraged by its recent failed attempt to cooperate with VW. “We remain available”, said De Meo.

It is worth noting that Renault, throughout its history, has cooperated in specific market areas with its competitors, including Mercedes and Fiat, and in 2024 initiated contacts with VW to jointly develop an affordable electric version of the compact Renault Twingo. However, VW eventually abandoned the negotiations after some time.

For the CEO of Renault, sharing technologies, including platforms, as well as architectures that can support various different models, can be particularly useful in the areas of city cars and commercial vehicles. “This usually requires large investments for small margins”, said Luca De Meo.

Last week, Luca de Meo and the chairman of the board of Stellantis, John Elkann, have now requested the European Union to adopt more favorable rules for city cars that are more affordable, warning that the decline in profitability of these vehicles could force the closure of factories in Europe.
