Denny Hamlin’s Bold Defense of Joey Logano’s Controversial Move at the All-Star Race

NASCAR fans were left on the edge of their seats during the recent All-Star Race as Denny Hamlin stood by Team Penske’s daring decision to keep Joey Logano on the track during a crucial caution. While this move raised eyebrows and sparked criticism, Hamlin backed the strategy that ultimately led to Logano losing the lead to Christopher Bell.

The pivotal moment came on Lap 217 when Logano, leading the race, opted to stay out on old tires while Bell and others chose to pit for fresh rubber. Despite Logano’s impressive 139 laps led, Bell’s fresher tires helped him surge ahead and clinch victory, leaving Logano settling for second place, a mere 0.829 seconds behind.

In a bold defense of Logano’s strategy, Hamlin shared his insights on his podcast, Actions Detrimental, emphasizing the unpredictability of restarts in NASCAR. He highlighted how Bell’s swift maneuvering through the pack on fresh tires ultimately sealed the deal, making it a challenging feat for Logano to fend him off.

Even Logano’s teammate, Ryan Blaney, couldn’t withstand Bell’s charge, further solidifying the argument that tire wear wasn’t the main factor in Logano’s loss, but rather the heat generated by the fresh rubber. Despite Logano’s dissatisfaction with the promoter’s caution rule, Hamlin pushed back, asserting that complaints should have been voiced pre-race rather than after its impact on the outcome.

The promoter’s caution, a new addition to this year’s All-Star Race, allowed for a strategic twist by bunching up the field and shaking up the race dynamics just as Logano seemed poised for victory. While Logano expressed his discontent with the rule post-race, Hamlin defended its entertainment value, reminding critics that the All-Star Race is designed for thrills and surprises.

As the NASCAR Cup Series continues its action-packed season, fans can anticipate more adrenaline-fueled showdowns like the one witnessed at the All-Star Race. Stay tuned for Denny Hamlin’s next move as he gears up for the upcoming Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway on Sunday, May 25.
