Penske’s Newgarden and Power Penalized, Sent to Back of Indy 500 Grid for Violation

In a shocking turn of events, Penske Racing has been hit with severe penalties ahead of the prestigious Indianapolis 500, shaking up the starting grid for the 2025 race. Star drivers Josef Newgarden and Will Power have been relegated to the back of the grid due to what officials have deemed a “clear violation” of regulations.

The controversy unfolded when both Newgarden’s #2 entry and Power’s #12 entry were pulled from the final day of qualifying after Newgarden’s car failed technical inspection for an unauthorized modification to the rear attenuator. This violation not only resulted in their disqualification from the top-12 shootout but also led to a series of penalties being imposed on the team.

As a result of the infractions, Newgarden and Power will now start from the 32nd and 33rd positions, respectively, in a major setback for the powerhouse Penske Racing outfit. IndyCar president Doug Boles emphasized the gravity of the situation, stating, “The integrity of the Indianapolis 500 is paramount, and this violation of the IndyCar rule against modification to this part and using it ‘as supplied’ is clear.”

Furthermore, in addition to the grid demotions, both drivers have had their team strategists suspended, forfeited their pit positions, and lost valuable championship points. The penalties also include a hefty $100,000 fine for each of the entries, adding financial strain to the already tarnished reputation of Penske Racing.

This latest development comes amidst heightened scrutiny due to Penske’s prominent position in the sport, with team owner Roger Penske also overseeing Penske Entertainment Corporation, which holds ownership of both the IndyCar series and the iconic Indianapolis Motor Speedway. The repeated infractions by the team have raised concerns about the integrity of the series, echoing past controversies that have plagued Penske Racing.

With the Indianapolis 500 fast approaching, the fallout from Penske’s penalties has sent shockwaves through the racing world, setting the stage for a dramatic and contentious showdown on the famed oval. As the racing community braces for the spectacle, all eyes will be on Newgarden and Power as they aim to overcome adversity and make their mark on the historic race.
