Ferrari’s Bold Move: Keeping Leclerc Out Under Late Safety Car at Imola Unleashes Controversy

In a shocking turn of events at the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix, Ferrari’s decision to keep Charles Leclerc out under a late Safety Car has ignited a firestorm of debate in the Formula 1 world. Team Principal Fred Vasseur staunchly defended the controversial call, labeling Leclerc’s two-stop strategy as “the perfect call” despite the intense scrutiny it faced.

Starting the race in 11th place, Leclerc faced an uphill battle from the get-go. However, a blend of aggression and strategic driving propelled him to a commendable sixth-place finish, showcasing the potential of the SF-25 car that has been criticized for its instability and lack of performance.

The pivotal moment came when a late Safety Car period prompted a flurry of cars to pit for fresh tires. Contrary to Leclerc’s request to do the same, Ferrari made the bold choice to keep him out on the track, with the brand-new C6 Soft tires as his only remaining option. Vasseur explained that the uncertainty surrounding the C6’s degradation rate played a significant role in the team’s decision-making process.

“When we had the Safety Car, [it] was something like 13-14 laps before the end, and we didn’t know how many laps the Safety Car would stay,” Vasseur elaborated. “Soft was really on the edge, we were not sure that when we started to communicate with Charles, at one stage he understood that it would be on the edge.”

Leclerc, well-aware of the potential time loss in a double-stack pit stop scenario, supported the team’s decision, deeming it the right call in the circumstances. Vasseur commended the coordination between the pit crew and Leclerc, emphasizing the meticulous planning that went into the strategy.

Despite the commendations, questions linger about the SF-25’s performance limitations and the impact of Ferrari’s strategy on both Leclerc and rival Lewis Hamilton, who capitalized on the situation to secure a fourth-place finish.

As the dust settles on the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix, the debate rages on. Was Ferrari’s gamble a stroke of genius or a reckless move that jeopardized Leclerc’s chances? Only time will tell the true repercussions of this high-stakes decision in the cutthroat world of Formula 1.
