Wolff guarantees that Mercedes will fully recover from the recent setback in F1.

Wolff garante que Mercedes irá se recuperar totalmente do recente revés na F1.

Lewis Hamilton, the British driver for Mercedes AMG in Formula 1, competed in the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix in Jeddah on March 8, 2024. The team principal of Mercedes, Toto Wolff, expressed full confidence that the team will overcome the recent setbacks faced in the sport. Since the implementation of the ground effect regulations in 2022, Mercedes has only achieved one victory, a significant drop from their previous eight consecutive Constructors’ titles. However, after abandoning their unsuccessful ‘zeropod’ solution, Mercedes believes that their redesigned W15 car has addressed the limitations of its predecessor. Despite facing engine cooling issues in Bahrain and a disappointing race in Saudi Arabia, Wolff recognizes a fundamental problem in the car’s performance in high-speed corners. He remains optimistic that Mercedes is better equipped to handle these challenges compared to previous seasons and is confident they will overcome them. While Wolff acknowledges they may not be able to surpass Max Verstappen in a Red Bull, he is confident that Mercedes will regain its position as a podium contender.

Wolff refuted the claim that Mercedes engineers had become overly confident after receiving positive feedback in testing, believing they had solved issues from previous seasons.

“This team has not shown overconfidence, in fact, we tend to lean towards the opposite. We view the situation through a pessimistic lens,” he stated. “That mindset remains, but it also drives us to find solutions.”

Despite hopes of reducing the gap during the off-season, George Russell finished 39.9 seconds behind the victorious Red Bull in Jeddah, compared to 25.8 seconds in the previous season.

However, Wolff dismissed any criticism of the team for falling behind their Austrian rivals, emphasizing that there should be no doubts about their collective efforts.

“I’ve changed my perspective. I don’t believe that adding more pressure on all of us will improve the situation,” explained Wolff, highlighting his new calm and measured approach.

“I believe we are facing a physics problem, not due to lack of effort, mindset, motivation, or energy. All these elements are present, and I can feel the enthusiasm within the organization.

“As race drivers, it’s natural to feel down in the face of such results, but we are striving to turn this into the right motivation for the next week. That’s why we must maintain our belief that we can turn the situation around, that our organization has the ability to overcome this challenge. I have total confidence that we can succeed.”
