Fernando Alonso’s Bold Statement: “Aston Martin Must Win in Australia in 2026”

Spanish driver Fernando Alonso brought Aston Martin to the front row at Imola, showcasing an impressive performance alongside teammate Lance Stroll. The duo managed to outshine the Ferraris of Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton, securing a spot in Q3. Alonso’s outstanding drive placed the Silverstone team in the third row, with the fifth fastest time overall, ahead of compatriot Carlos Sainz.

Despite the success at Imola, Alonso remained focused on the ultimate goal for Aston Martin, emphasizing the importance of winning in Australia. In a post-race interview, the two-time world champion stated, “I am happy for the team, but what matters to me is winning in Australia. Points tomorrow? It should finally be my big opportunity. I don’t expect to maintain the fifth position, but at the same time, I hope not to lose more than two. It’s tough to overtake at Imola.”

The introduction of the C6 compound for the soft tires at Imola presented a challenge during Qualifying. Aston Martin navigated this dilemma with a strategic approach, using both tire compounds in all Qualifying sessions. Alonso highlighted the confusion surrounding tire selection, stating, “There was a lot of confusion, it was unclear which tire was better, so we used both compounds in all Qualifying sessions.”

Alonso’s determination to lead Aston Martin to victory in Australia sets a high bar for the team’s future ambitions. With a strong performance at Imola and a strategic tire management approach, the team is poised for success in the upcoming races.
