Ott Tänak Dominates in Rally Portugal Amidst Safety Concerns Raised by Rovanperä

Estonian driver Ott Tänak took charge in the grueling Rally Portugal, leading the pack with a seven-second advantage over Sébastien Ogier after a demanding Friday leg. Despite facing a tough challenge from Toyota following his teammate Adrien Fourmaux’s retirement, Tänak showcased his skill and determination, extending his lead throughout the day.

One of the main talking points of the rally was the excessively long itinerary, with concerns raised about the safety implications of the extended hours spent in the car. Kalle Rovanperä was vocal about the issue, emphasizing the fatigue and safety risks posed by such demanding schedules. Rovanperä highlighted the need to address the length of the rally days to ensure the well-being of the drivers.

Tänak, the 2019 world champion, maintained a narrow lead since the early stages of Rally Portugal, further solidifying his position with impressive performances. His lead widened significantly after stage wins on Mortágua and Sever-Albergaria, with the latter marking his 400th scratch time in the World Rally Championship.

Meanwhile, Takamoto Katsuta briefly surpassed Sébastien Ogier for second place but struggled in the final stages of the day, allowing Rovanperä to close in on the podium positions. Thierry Neuville showcased a stronger performance in the afternoon, narrowing the gap to the Toyota drivers and expressing concerns about the challenging Mortágua test.

Championship leader Elfyn Evans faced difficulties as the roadsweeper in the final stages, conceding positions on the leaderboard. Evans acknowledged the need to improve his performance despite the unfavorable road conditions. The internal battle of the M-Sport drivers saw Grégoire Munster leading the pack, with Josh McErlean trailing by 4.1 seconds.

Amidst the intense competition, Mārtinš Sesks encountered a series of setbacks, including a puncture change and a penalty for delays at the start line. Sesks’ challenging day culminated in a dramatic moment when he hit a bank, causing his car to go airborne. Despite the mishaps, Sesks managed to navigate the remaining stages cautiously.

As Rally Portugal unfolds with thrilling twists and challenging conditions, drivers continue to push their limits in pursuit of victory while grappling with safety concerns and intense competition on the demanding tracks.
