The FIA has dropped the hammer on Williams following a pit lane incident involving Carlos Sainz at the Imola Grand Prix. The team has been slapped with a hefty €1,000 fine after Sainz was caught speeding during practice, zooming at 93.7 kilometers per hour, a whopping 13.7 kph over the 80kph limit.

The breach of Article 34.7 of the FIA Formula One Sporting Regulations led to the imposition of the financial penalty by the FIA stewards. The verdict stated that “Car 55 exceeded the pit lane speed limit by 13.7km/h.” Teams were reminded of their right to appeal such decisions within the specified time limits.

Despite the fine, Sainz put up a strong performance during the practice session, securing the third-best time behind the McLaren duo of Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris. His fastest lap was only 0.052 seconds slower than Piastri’s leading time.

Following a solid showing at the Miami Grand Prix, where Sainz qualified sixth and finished ninth, the Spaniard’s momentum was briefly halted by the pit lane incident at Imola. The situation in Miami, where confusion on the Williams pit wall led to teammate Alex Albon overtaking Sainz, had already left the driver frustrated.

Sainz’s outburst over team radio in Miami led to a promise from Williams team principal James Vowles to enhance communication between drivers and race engineers. Vowles reassured fans that such incidents would not recur, emphasizing the need to create a conducive environment for both drivers to excel.

The penalty on Williams serves as a reminder to all teams and drivers to adhere strictly to the regulations set forth by the FIA, ensuring fair play and safety on the track. With the season in full swing, every detail counts, and teams must remain vigilant to avoid any further sanctions that could impact their performance on race day.
