Mercedes AMG F1 W15, driven by George Russell from Great Britain, took part in the Formula 1 World Championship race at the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix in Jeddah on 03/08/2024. Mercedes team principal, Toto Wolff, suggested that there are issues with the correlation between the data obtained from the team’s simulator and the actual performance of their 2024 Formula 1 car. Despite concerns about engine cooling in Bahrain, Mercedes was optimistic about the performance of their revamped W15 in Saudi Arabia. However, the team failed to replicate their promising pace in practice during the race, finishing in sixth and ninth place. Mercedes struggled in the high-speed sections of the Jeddah Corniche Circuit, which affected their overall performance. This was evident when Lewis Hamilton was faster than Lando Norris towards the end of the race, but couldn’t make up enough time to fully capitalize on his straight-line speed advantage. Wolff, however, dismissed the idea that the team’s decision to use a less loaded rear wing configuration was the sole cause of the performance deficit in the faster corners. He believes that the lack of high-speed downforce is the main factor affecting their lap times. The simulation tools used by Mercedes did not accurately predict their performance on the race track with their latest ground effect car. Wolff acknowledged that there are limitations to how much the team can adjust the car setup to address the high-speed deficiency. Despite making adjustments to the rear wing, the expected performance increase did not materialize in lap times.
Wolff confirmed that Mercedes has resolved several issues that plagued them last season, including the problematic characteristics of their previous model, the W14.
“I believe we had a lot of uncertainties last year, where we thought this could be a cause and that could be a cause, and we addressed those issues,” he said.
“We can see from the sensors that we have what we needed.
“But there is still this behavior of the car in a specific speed range where our sensors and simulations indicate that we should have downforce, but we are not getting it.”
However, in addition to concerns about inaccurate data from their simulation tools, Mercedes also faced a recurrence of jumps at the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix.
Russell suggested that Mercedes may need to make a compromise and increase the height of the car at the expense of downforce to minimize the problem.
“So, the issue is that we have been pursuing this fundamental aspect for two and a half years… there is something we need to identify two years ago, and that is the key to unlocking,” Wolff said about the “porpoising” phenomenon.
“It’s not for lack of effort, we’ve tried so hard and now we have to make a huge effort next week with more data to understand and come back stronger to Melbourne.
“We are on a mission with this and I am completely confident that we will reduce this performance gap.”
