Formula 1 drivers slam FIA over controversial swearing ban reversal

The Formula 1 world is in turmoil as drivers express their outrage over the FIA’s handling of the swearing ban saga. George Russell, a Mercedes driver, has been vocal in his criticism, labeling the situation as a “ludicrous mess” and questioning the FIA’s integrity in reversing the ban.

Russell condemned the FIA for implementing the ban in the first place, stating that the penalties for profanity “should never have happened.” Despite the recent adjustments to the rule, Russell refused to commend the governing body, emphasizing that the ban should never have existed.

FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem led a comprehensive review of the International Sporting Code, resulting in reduced fines for swearing and granting stewards the authority to suspend penalties under certain circumstances. However, Russell expressed his frustration with the FIA’s management of the issue, highlighting a lack of communication from senior FIA officials.

Max Verstappen also weighed in on the controversy, expressing relief that the FIA acknowledged the initial ruling as “too aggressive.” The Dutch driver applauded the revised approach but underscored the need for further changes within the organization.

Meanwhile, Lewis Hamilton, a seven-time World Champion, described the entire saga as “ridiculous” and emphasized the necessity for significant changes. Hamilton criticized the current state of affairs within the FIA, calling for a more transparent and responsive approach to addressing drivers’ concerns.

As a director of the Grand Prix Drivers’ Association (GPDA), Russell and his peers penned a letter to the FIA following the Sao Paulo Grand Prix, expressing their discontent with the lack of dialogue and engagement from the governing body. Russell emphasized the importance of mutual cooperation and communication to resolve the ongoing issues effectively.

The Formula 1 community remains divided over the FIA’s controversial swearing ban reversal, with drivers demanding greater transparency, communication, and accountability from the governing body. As the season progresses, the spotlight remains on the FIA’s decision-making processes and the drivers’ push for meaningful changes within the sport.
