FIA President’s Power Grab Ruffles Feathers Amongst Officials

In a bold move that has sent shockwaves through the motorsport community, FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem is reportedly pushing for changes that would significantly increase his control over the organization. The proposal, which is set to be voted on at the upcoming General Assembly, has raised concerns about the President’s motives and intentions.

Since taking the helm in 2021, Ben Sulayem has been no stranger to controversy, with his leadership marked by a series of high-profile resignations and dismissals. The latest proposals, outlined in a leaked document obtained by BBC Sport, suggest a consolidation of power in the hands of the Emirati President, sparking fears of diminished checks and balances within the FIA.

While some within the organization have refrained from commenting due to non-disclosure agreements, others have spoken out against the proposed changes. One unnamed individual expressed apprehension, stating, “Most proposals aim at some sort of consolidation of power, more centralized control, and trying to eliminate independent checks and balances.” Another observer noted that the document was “very cleverly written,” masking a potential power grab under the guise of moral high ground.

Of particular concern is a proposal to tighten the timeline for potential challengers to declare their candidacy for the presidency, potentially thwarting any opposition to Ben Sulayem’s leadership. Additionally, the President could gain the authority to disqualify candidates and exert greater influence over the composition of the organization’s senate.

One contentious clause in the document emphasizes the importance of candidates’ professional integrity, hinting at stringent criteria that could serve as a barrier to entry for certain contenders. With Ben Sulayem already overseeing key committees responsible for vetting candidates, questions have been raised about the fairness and transparency of the electoral process.

The proposed changes come amidst rumors of former rally champion Carlos Sainz Sr considering a bid for the presidency, a development that has garnered mixed reactions within the motorsport community. However, with Ben Sulayem’s grip on power tightening, Sainz’s aspirations may face insurmountable obstacles, potentially reshaping the landscape of FIA leadership.

As the motorsport world braces for a potential shift in power dynamics, the implications of Ben Sulayem’s proposed changes are sure to reverberate far beyond the corridors of the FIA. Stay tuned for more updates as this gripping saga unfolds.
