Zak Brown: Ferrari, Not Verstappen, Is McLaren’s Biggest Threat in 2024 Title Race

In a shocking revelation, Zak Brown, CEO of McLaren, has unveiled a disturbing saga involving Alpine’s alleged attempt to “bully” rising star Oscar Piastri into joining their Formula 1 team for the 2023 season. Brown exposed Alpine’s aggressive tactics, accusing them of manipulating the situation to force Piastri into their lineup, only to lose him to McLaren in the end.

According to Brown, Alpine went as far as releasing a press statement without even consulting Piastri, creating immense pressure on the young driver. The CEO condemned Alpine’s actions, describing them as a blatant attempt to strong-arm Piastri into compliance. Despite being Alpine’s reserve driver at the time, Piastri was already under contract with McLaren, who had big plans for his future within their team.

The dramatic turn of events unfolded when Alpine hastily announced Piastri as Fernando Alonso’s successor, without obtaining the driver’s consent. Piastri swiftly took to social media to refute the claim, stating firmly that he had not signed any contract with Alpine for the upcoming season, thus sparking a heated legal battle between the two teams.

After a rigorous two-day hearing, the FIA’s Contract Recognition Board ruled in favor of McLaren, solidifying Piastri’s commitment to the team and compelling Alpine to cover the legal expenses incurred during the dispute. The humiliating defeat forced Alpine to acknowledge the outcome and shift their focus to the future.

McLaren’s interest in Piastri had been steadily growing throughout the 2022 season, particularly as Daniel Ricciardo’s performance faltered. Brown highlighted Piastri’s exceptional talent and track record in junior formulas, coupled with a strong relationship with Mark Webber, as pivotal factors in McLaren’s decision to secure the young driver. Piastri’s impressive performances this season have justified McLaren’s faith in him, leading to a new long-term contract being inked earlier this year.

As Piastri continues to dominate the 2025 Drivers’ Championship, McLaren’s strategic move to poach him from Alpine has undeniably paid off. The young prodigy’s success on the track serves as a testament to McLaren’s astute decision-making and reinforces Piastri’s choice to walk away from Alpine.
