While Tsunoda has struggled to match Verstappen’s pace on race weekends, he has shown improvement compared to Lawson, securing minor points in Bahrain and an impressive sixth-place finish in the sprint and a tenth-place finish in the race in Miami. Red Bull’s chief engineer, Paul Monaghan, has praised Tsunoda for his seamless integration into the team and his resilience in the face of competing alongside a world champion like Verstappen.
“He seems to be settling in really well, actually. It’s not the easiest situation to deal with,” Monaghan commented during the Miami weekend. “He’s not afraid to speak his mind, he says what he wants and what he doesn’t like, which is good. He’s part of the team, he’s a good member, and he’ll be fine.”
Helmut Marko, also impressed with Tsunoda’s progress, highlighted areas where the young driver needs to improve, particularly under pressure during crucial moments in a race weekend. Marko pointed out, “He’s the first [Verstappen] team-mate who can get a taste of Max’s performance. Unfortunately, when the pressure increases, he still makes mistakes.”
As Tsunoda continues to navigate his role at Red Bull Racing, the spotlight remains on his performance alongside Verstappen.
