Toyota’s Dominance in World Rally Championship Deemed ‘Irrelevant’ by Technical Director

The roaring engines and flying gravel in the World Rally Championship are about to take a dramatic turn as Toyota’s technical director, Tom Fowler, declares the team’s prior domination as “irrelevant” heading into Rally Portugal this week. Despite the GR Yaris Rally1’s outstanding performance in the early part of the 2025 season, Fowler remains grounded, emphasizing the ever-changing dynamics of each rally.

Fowler’s unwavering stance on the team’s mindset reveals a stark truth – what has transpired in previous events holds no weight as the competition shifts to the challenging gravel roads of Matosinhos. The technical guru highlighted the distinctiveness of each rally, from varying surfaces to tire-car-setup combinations, stressing that past victories offer no guarantees in upcoming races.

Reflecting on their recent triumph in Canarias, Fowler emphasized the need for a reality check, stating, “However good the result was in Canarias, it can be the reverse in Portugal.” This candid assessment underscores Toyota’s commitment to humility and continuous improvement, shunning any complacency that could arise from their early success in the season.

While Toyota’s dominance on familiar terrains has been undeniable, Fowler hinted at a reset for the team as they face the unique challenges of Rally Portugal. The Safari-spec GR Yaris Rally1 presents a whole new ball game, requiring adjustments in ride height and car geometry that set it apart from previous configurations. “Essentially we are starting again in Portugal,” Fowler remarked, alluding to the team’s readiness to adapt and innovate in the quest for victory.

As the rallying world eagerly awaits the showdown in Portugal, Toyota’s remarkable track record on the rugged terrains of mainland Europe fuels anticipation for another stellar performance. With five consecutive victories at Rally Portugal under their belt, Toyota’s pursuit of excellence shows no signs of slowing down, setting the stage for a thrilling and unpredictable battle on the dusty trails of Matosinhos.
