In a shocking revelation, it has been uncovered that NASCAR icon Jeff Gordon was on the brink of potentially making a groundbreaking move to Formula 1, a decision that could have revolutionized the sport in America decades earlier. The lead commentator for IndyCar on FOX and seasoned Formula 1 journalist, Will Buxton, discussed this jaw-dropping possibility on Kevin Harvick’s Happy Hour podcast, sending shockwaves through the racing world.

Buxton disclosed that there were discussions for Gordon to join Team Cool Green in IndyCar while the three-time Indy 500 champion, Dario Franchitti, would transition to BAR (British American Racing) in Formula 1. The plan was for Gordon and Franchitti to eventually become teammates at BAR, a move that would have undoubtedly elevated the profile of F1 in the United States well before the popular “Drive to Survive” series came into play.

Although this ambitious switch was set to take place around 1999, it ultimately never materialized. Despite never getting the chance to compete in F1, Gordon did participate in a memorable ride swap with Juan Pablo Montoya, showcasing his impressive skills behind the wheel of a Williams FW25 in 2003.

The conversation didn’t stop there, as the podcast also delved into the aspirations of current NASCAR sensation Kyle Larson, who has expressed interest in testing the waters of Formula 1. Buxton expressed his desire to see more drivers from different racing disciplines crossing over to F1, criticizing the restrictive licensing system that often hinders such transitions.

The existing regulations have even prevented rising American IndyCar star Colton Herta from potentially making the leap to F1 due to the stringent super license requirements. Buxton highlighted the disparity in how achievements in various racing series are valued when it comes to qualifying for an F1 super license, emphasizing the need for a more inclusive approach to allow talent from diverse backgrounds to shine on the global stage.

As the motorsport world continues to evolve, the tantalizing prospect of drivers like Jeff Gordon and Kyle Larson making the leap to Formula 1 serves as a reminder of the untapped potential and excitement that could unfold on the international racing scene.
